Elder Hugo E. Martinez

General Authority Seventy

Elder Hugo E. Martinez was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 5, 2014. At the time of his call, he had been serving as a member of the Fourth Quorum of the Seventy in the Caribbean Area. He served as a member of the Caribbean Area Presidency and at Church headquarters. He currently serves as the Second Counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency.

Elder Martinez completed his premedical studies at the University of Mississippi from 1974 to 1977. In 1981 he received a medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. In 1984 he completed a family practice residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Elder Martinez worked for 20 years as a physician and medical consultant before retiring in 2004.

Elder Martinez has served in numerous Church callings, including bishop, elders quorum president, district president, counselor in a mission presidency, president of the Guatemala City Central Mission (2005–2008), and Area Seventy.

Hugo Edgardo Martinez was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, on January 10, 1957. He married Nuria Merced Alvarez Pagan in December 1980. They are the parents of five children.
